Adventure training, or outdoor pursuits, is a very big part of Durham / Northumberland Wing. There are many staff with qualifications from leading walking groups to mountaineering, and mountain biking to kayaking. The range of activities offered within the Wing are varied and also regularly added to; giving cadets a chance to try different things at little cost and in a controlled and safe environment.
Adventure training in the Wing is supplemented by a yearly challenge weekend when all the squadrons gather to compete in a set of tasks including orienteering, first aid, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, archery and more. Although a competition, the weekend serves mostly as a chance for cadets from different squadrons to gather together on a camping weekend and have fun.
Each year there are week long camps held at Windermere and Llanbedr, dedicated adventure training centers. These weeks give cadets chance to try a very broad range of activities at a very low cost.
